On sabr

Patience isn't passive

By EHA & CO. · June 30, 2026 · 2 min read

Sabr gets translated as patience, and patience gets pictured as waiting, sitting still while life happens to you. That is not quite it. Sabr is closer to steadiness under weight. It is something you do, not something that is done to you.

The Qur'an pairs it with prayer for a reason: both take effort, both are practiced. To hold your tongue when you have every right to speak, to keep showing up for the fajr you cannot feel, to carry a loss without letting it harden you, that is sabr. Active restraint, chosen again and again.

There is a quiet dignity in it. Not the drama of the grand gesture, but the strength of the person who stays even. Worn as a word, it is a reminder on the days you need it most: steady, not still.
